About Colette

Colette Dartford writes contemporary fiction for adults.  Her books evoke a strong sense of place: the sun-drenched Napa Valley in Northern California; the fertile vineyards of South West France; England’s vibrant capital and its windswept countryside. Her debut novel, Learning To Speak American, was published as an e-book in November 2015 and was an Amazon top 100 bestseller, reaching number 5 in Romance. The paperback version of Learning To Speak American was published in July 2016. Colette’s second novel, An Unsuitable Marriage, was published by Bonnier Zaffre in March 2017 and is a kindle bestseller. You can learn more about Colette’s work in ‘Forthcoming Books’ or read her Blog, where she shares her experience of graduating from an enthusiastic amateur to a professional author. Colette is represented by Robert Kirby at United Agents and published by Bonnier Zaffre.

Colette on Culture Fly

An Unsuitable Marriage is an astutely written story about a fractured marriage and a family at breaking point. It carries many of the same emotional qualities as Dartford’s debut, Learning To Speak American, making it an engaging family drama. Love and betrayal come hand in hand here, as a husband and wife face terrible strain and a…

Emotional. Surprisingly light reading considering the dark subject matter (I think that must be the effect of all that San Franciscan sunshine!). Thoughtfully broad-minded.

A nice easy read. I liked the writing style too – uncomplicated. It’s about how Lola and Duncan’s marriage and the aftermath of their daughter’s death, the nature of which is drip fed to the reader. There are many emotions running through this book, sorrow, regret, love, deceit, new beginnings, hope, betrayal, depression. The ending was…

When I’m asked what I do and reply that I’m a writer, people tend to react in one of two ways. Either they tell me they’re thinking of writing a book too, and proceed to describe it in detail, or they express surprised admiration because they understand that it’s hard to write a book and…
